Puppy teething is normal. Destruction is optional. The correct plan plus the right teething toys for puppies reduces gum discomfort and teaches what is allowed to chew.

This post lists 5 steps for teething relief and basic bite manners.

1. Provide a Variety of Textures (Hard, Soft, and Edible)

Different textures deliver different relief. A single toy type increases household target selection.

Use a simple chew menu:

  • Rubber: Non-toxic rubber provides rebound and gum pressure relief.

  • Soft plush: For light mouthing. Remove any loose parts.

  • Edible chews: Puppy-safe options only. Supervision required.

Chompster is currently refining the Chompster Paw, a durable Chompster chew toy for heavy chewing demand. Status: PRE-LAUNCH. More information: getchompster.com.

2. The Power of the Deep Freeze

Cold reduces gum inflammation and numbs discomfort.

Options:

  • Frozen carrot: Peeled. Whole. Size-appropriate.

  • Frozen towel: Clean washcloth. Twisted. Frozen.

  • Chilled rubber toy: Freezer-safe teething toys for puppies only. 30–60 minutes.

NOTE: Ice cubes may be too hard for small puppies. Tooth damage risk.

3. Master the Art of Redirection and Soft-Mouth Training

Biting is a teething behavior. Training response is required.

Protocol:

  1. Issue a short "Ow!" or "Yelp!".

  2. Replace skin/clothing with a toy. Use one of the preferred teething toys for puppies.

  3. Reward chewing the toy.

If biting continues: initiate reverse time-out for 30 seconds. End interaction.

4. Implement a Toy Rotation System

Toy novelty decays fast. Rotation restores interest.

Procedure:

  • Deploy 3–4 toys only.

  • Store remaining toys in a bin.

  • Swap toys every 2–3 days.

Result: fewer attempts to chew prohibited items.

5. Use Mental Stimulation and Strategic Crate Time

Overtired puppies chew harder and make worse choices.

Controls:

  • Puzzle feeding: Stuff with kibble or a small amount of peanut butter. Supervision required.

  • Crate rest: Use for enforced naps. Provide a safe chew item.

Goal: reduce unmanaged energy and redirect chewing.

Looking Ahead: The Chompster Promise

Market issue: "indestructible" claims with unsafe materials or overly rigid designs.

Chompster product goal: durable and safe. Current product in development: Chompster Paw, a durable chew toy from Chompster. Status: PRE-LAUNCH. Updates available at getchompster.com.

Safety First: A Quick Reminder

No dog toy is 100% indestructible. Supervision required. Inspect toys. Discard damaged toys.

Teething typically improves by ~6 months. Maintain consistency. Maintain access to teething toys for puppies.
